Introduction to Cardiovascular Surgery

1. What is Cardiovascular Surgery?

Cardiovascular surgery is a medical department that performs surgical treatment for diseases of the heart and blood vessels. We provide treatment including surgery for diseases such as arteriosclerosis obliterans and lower extremity varicose veins (endovascular ablation (radio wave surgery)).

In addition, we also manage hemodialysis for many patients with chronic renal failure in cooperation with dialysis physicians and nephrologists, and perform internal shunt surgery and shunt PTA (percutaneous angioplasty) for dialysis patients. We are doing.

Laser treatment for lower extremity varicose veins has been covered by insurance since 2011, and surgery using the latest laser and radio wave equipment is now covered by insurance. At our hospital, we started laser surgery in December 2012, and since April 2021 we have shifted to radio wave (high frequency) surgery.

About the disease called varicose veins

The veins of the lower extremities are divided into “deep veins” that run inside the muscles and “superficial veins” that run between the skin and muscles.Aneurysms are formed in superficial veins called saphenous veins, which are close to the skin. Blood in the veins of the lower extremities due to gravityTherefore, valves are attached to prevent backflow to the feet, but if those valves are broken, backflow of blood will occur,Congestion causes blood vessels to dilate and tortuous, resulting in bumps. This is a lower extremity varicose vein.

Symptoms include swelling of leg veins, itching, dermatitis, blackened skin, ulceration, dullness,HeavyI get tired, cramps (leg cramps), etc.

A thin catheter is passed through the superficial vein to be treated, and high-frequency heat is applied to the inner wall of the vein in the lower extremity. It is a method of cauterization and occlusion. Stripping surgery, which used to be standard practice, surgically removes damaged superficial veins in the thighs, but endovascular ablation (radiofrequency (high frequency) surgery) closes the veins from within the blood vessels. It will stop the blood from flowing. The goal is the same: to abolish the function of superficial veins causing reflux. Intravascular ablation is treated with a catheter, but it is broadly divided into laser and radio waves depending on the ablation method.

▶ What is radiofrequency (high frequency) surgery compared to laser surgery?

1 Less damage to surrounding tissue
2 Output control ensures consistent cauterization
3 Rapid and uniform ablation with segmental ablation every 7 cm

Despite the above characteristics, modern laser and radio frequency equipment are all similar to early lasers.
It is less invasive and less postoperative pain.

If you have bumps in your leg veins (varicose veins), please consult with the Cardiovascular Surgery Outpatient Department (Thursday morning or afternoon). After an outpatient examination and ultrasound diagnosis of varicose veins in the lower extremities, we will explain whether treatment is necessary and how to treat it.
